From OED: name
c. To give a name or names to (a person or thing). Also (freq. in pass.) with after, from, for (now chiefly N. Amer.), to (Eng. regional (south-west.)), of, indicating the origin of the name.
At one time he [sc. Peter VanRensselaer] owned thousands of acres in this region and the city of Rensselaer is named for him.

I think "named after" and "named for" are same in your example. However, "named for" is American English.
