Many engineering-kind articles (not econometrics, but economics!) are actually leading to very ideological results since they are viewing those time-series are produced in a lab, not in a society(many famous RBC guys are fellows of Hoover institute. Some even refer to Heritage Foundation.) Those are 2nd-tier engineers 1st-tier economists (It's the profession's shame to let this happen since less technical people are fooled by the seemingly fancy math techniques).
What makes a good economist(not econometrics) shouldn't be math, rather should be the profound insight of the society. Math should be jsut the tool.
